Arkansas Advance Sheets Meeting:  Friday Morning Group

January 16, 2023.  Last week the Arkansas Court of Appeals issued a syllabus.  That means we can start expecting cases soon.  We plan to resume meeting online as soon as there are cases to discuss.

If you're interested, call Gerry Schulze or Helena Schulze at 501-537-1000 and say you're calling about advance sheets.

We are still meeting online.  We started meeting online during the pandemic, but we're keeping it up because we can have people from outside Little Rock participate.

January 30, 2019.   It looks like the Courts are back in session.  We need to keep up with them.

Denny's has been remodeled, and it looks nice.  The room is now a little smaller, but it's still large enough for us.

We are still working on the schedule.  I'll post it as soon as we have something definite.  In the meantime, we will be there Friday, February 1, 2019, at 7:30 in the morning, and someone will have read at least some of the cases.

Just a quick explanation of the group for those who may be interested.  This is a group of lawyers who meet every Friday morning at 7:30 at Denny's on Shackleford in Little Rock, Arkansas when the Arkansas appellate courts are in session.  This group is the successor of groups that have existed "from time whereof the memory of man runneth not to the contrary."  (William Blackstone, Of the Laws of England, 1753, quoting from Coke's Institutes). The term "Advance Sheets" refers to the way we used to get decisions of the courts--advance printings of what would become case reporters.  Using that technology, lawyers could become aware of cases decided by the courts mere months earlier. Using today's technology, cases are published on the courts' websites and are available within seconds of their official publication.

Today we assign teams of two lawyers to review the cases of the week and present those cases that we feel are important to the development of the law.  After the presenters have had their turn, anyone else may discuss any case that he or she deems significant.  We have different attitudes as to what constitutes a significant case.  Some of us prefer to say at least something about every one of them.  Some of us prefer to seek out the case so inconsequential that nobody would deem it significant and comment on it anyway.

The participants practice in many different areas of the law.  We offer commentary and suggestions to each other.

I (Gerry Schulze) am devoted to the principles of continuing professional education.  I have found these sessions among the most useful of continuing education available.  I highly recommend Advance Sheets to lawyers both new and--like me--old.

September 6, 2018.
Meetings resume.  See you at Denny's at 7:30 am.  Gerry and Robert will be presenting cases from the Arkansas Court of Appeals.

June 15, 2018.   There will be no meeting.  We will be at the Arkansas Bar Association Annual Meeting.

February 23, 2018
.  We invite anyone interested in following the decisions of the Arkansas Supreme Court or Court of Appeals to come to the meetings and hear what we have to say.  We take turns analyzing the decisions, but there is always a lively discussion.

We ask members to take turns reviewing cases.

This is the schedule for September:

September 7, 2018- Robert Tschiemer and Gerry Schulze.
September 14, 2018- R. David Lewis and Oscar Hirby.
September 21, 2018-Fred Hart and David Hodges
September 28, 2018-  David Hawkey and David Horn

We meet at Denny's on Shackleford Road on Fridays at 7:30 a.m.  We meet every week that the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals hand down decisions, assuming weather permits.  If you want to know whether we're meeting some particular week, you can check with R. David Lewis (501) 664-0818 or Gerry Schulze (501) 537-1000.

We really encourage lawyers to join us to help keep up with what is going on in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.  The law is constantly changing and evolving.  In the American legal system, decisions of our highest courts explain, clarify, and sometimes even change the laws under which we live.  It is the obligation of every lawyer to keep up with the changes in the law as well as possible. One way to do that is to read and discuss the opinions of the appellate courts.

The contribution of lawyers who practice in varying fields is often useful.  Who knows, you may learn something, and you may teach us something.

Any lawyers licensed in Arkansas, and any support staff, are welcome to attend.  We can also make room for interested others.
